my boxy only wants to eat worms

quincy Jun 26, 2006 08:02 AM

and a few mulberries now and again. How can I get him to eat other foods like greens or crickets..He is in an outdoor enclosure so crickets would be hard to feed without them running off, unless I can find a way to confine them to a dish.
BTW he is a young ornate box turtle, maybe 2-3inches snout to vent.

My 3-toed boxies will eat Zoo-Med's canned box turtle food even when they are being picky. I chop greens and veggies very finely and mix in with the canned food -- I think the (artificial, probably) scent and flavor in the canned food attacts them and covers up the taste of anything I mix in. Fed judiciously, this fruit-based food is useful for picky feeders (and for getting them to eat meds and vitamins, BTW).

I have never kept ornates, so this trick may work less well for them, but it is worth a try.
