tigers: more than one ok?

iced_urth Jun 26, 2006 12:28 PM

Hey guys, I’m new to this forum. Among several other herps, I have a tiger salamander which I’ve had for about 6 years now. I’m not sure what species it is. I think it may be a blotched or a gray. I’ve been wanting to put another tiger in with this one, but I’ve been wondering whether or not it’s a good idea. Does anybody here have any input in regards to housing more than one tiger salamander? If it wouldn’t hurt to do this, would it be ok to put in a tiger of another species, like a barred? I’d appreciate any advice that anybody here can give.

As long as the tiger salamanders are similarly sized, and you have at least a 20 gal. tank, they will be fine.

20 gallons with a linear length of at least 24 inches. Doesn't matter how tall it is - but longer is better. General rule is 12 linear inches per adult tiger. If you are adding a new tiger - I would quarantine it for a month or so to make sure it is healthy before introducing it to an animal that I had had for 6 years. Of course, if you have a vet that treats caudates - it would be optimal to have the new one checked out before introduction.

as others have stated, more than one tiger is fine as long as they have a big enough tank. i have a 150 gal tank (72x18x24) with 9 adult tigers and 1 adult yellow spotted salamander. there are 5 different species of tigers mixed together and i have had them like this for 2 years now, i got my first 16 years ago and have been adding on ever since. tigers need a good amount of space to roam and at least three inches of soil to burrow, they are mole salamanders and are primarily nocturnal and subterrarian. two adults should have at least a 20 gal long if not a 30 gal breeder. i had 4 adults tigers and the yellow spot comfortably in a 75 gal tank. until i got more, than i upgraded.

Thanks a lot guys. I appreciate the info. I'm going to move my tiger into a 20 gallon long, that's the biggest size tank that I have. When I get the other one I'll make sure to quarantine it for at least couple months before putting it in with the other one. That's awesome that I can put another species of tiger in with mine because I've been wanting to get a barred.

Do not keep ANYTHING else with a tiger salamander.
They frequently snap at other critters that brush up against them, as a feeding response. Even if that critter is too large to eat, a tiger will tear its skin.
If you keep two together, sooner or later you WILL be treating one of them for a skin infection.
