setting up a tank

petkingdom Jun 26, 2006 04:50 PM

I am going to try to start setting up a tank for the dart frogs, wich i have never raised before but have exp. w/ other frogs.

I am thinking of using gravel for the first inch or so. how would I go about putting a pump in for a waterfall?

How do i filter the water, or change the water? I will have a small river or pond area.

for the background I am going to use the foam method. Should I keep it off the bottom about an inch so the water doesnt touch?
Thanks for any help you can give

Scroll down through the threads to June 23, and read the posts from there. If that doesn't give you all of the information you want, it should give you some more specific questions to ask.

I believe everyone deserves personal answers, but general set-ups are discussed on a weekly basis, so we tend to repeat ourselves much too often for own comfort when answering them. And those of us who have kept darts for some time and have set up several tanks for them, have a dozen different ideas on how to do it-- most of which work. It's really hard to give you a fool-proof formula.

I thought I'd never say this, but try the Search feature and read some of the past posts on setting up a dart tank, if the most recent suggestion (June 23) is not what you want to do.

Then, don't go away-- come back and we can help you clear up any confusions. You can really do a huge variety of things, depending upon tank size, the species of dart frogs you are interested in, and your budget.

i found this site and it helped me out alot. maybe for the others starting out first time it will help.

my question now is, how often do you change/clean the water and how am I supposed to do this? i havent seen anyone mention how to change water or get it out. I might just be being oblivious to this

I rarely change the water, only add to it, except at first, when the tank is cycling and there's a lot of foam and tannins causing some discoloration. A live-planted tank with cycling water will stay pretty clean, especially after mosses and nitrifying bacteria are established.

All you need to do to change the water or do a partial change, is run a length of aquarium airline tubing down one corner to the bottom of the water layer, then over the top and into a container of some sort. Then you merely siphon it out by starting the siphoning action with a 30 to 50 ml. syringe with a cannula tip. You can get these at any veterinarian supply store such as Cal Ranch. As long as the container is lower than the bottom of your water level, it will drain out. (Like siphoning gas from a gas tank.)
