went out Saturday night...got out late...mainly seen DORs on the road
3 shovelnosed
1 sidewinder
1 lyresnake
we then got out & walked around some rock...(where we found rosy boas on the last trip)
found a longnosed snake cruising around

I spent the night out in the back of my truck. When I got up in the morning. I had to releave myself, so I went over to the bush I parked next to...before I did...I spotted a coachwhip in the bush. In all the excitment, I forgot about releaving myself for about a 1/2 hour...LOL!

Nice Pics! How was the behavior with the coachwhip? I had an experiance with one last summer and have never recieved so many bites from a snake in my life. I could'nt wait to release it in the field and get away.

Here is a pic of a Longnose snake that I found last saturday above Palmdale.

yeah, the coachwhip tried to bite at first...I new that was comin' though...every story I heard about them involved getting bit...that was a lifer for me...I have tried catching them on the run...but I think they are just laughing at me as they fly through the desert then go into a hole to get away.

Dang, man, you're seein' Longnoses too. Now I'm really jealous. Coachwhips are crazy biting machines. Some of the SWHS guys found one while herping the reservoir.

What do you mean by "above Palmdale"?

I live in Lancaster and come across those occasionally. One of my local favorites. I'd really like to see a night snake, I'm told they are common but they have eluded me for 3 years of cruising so far.

I had a customer bring me a night snake from Lancaster once. Like metalpest, I too have never seen one out and about while road crusing!

Seeing this snake(I call it a red racer) reminds me of when I was 15 or so(almost 40 years ago). I was looking for snakes with my friend when we saw the biggest snake I had ever seen out looking for them. This was a red racer probably 8 feet or so. It was absolutely gigantic. It climbed a tree with my friend hot after it. He reached for it and it struck him 4 or 5 times in rapid succession. I did not offer to help. Suddenly, the snake was gone. So fast it was like magic. We looked and looked, to no avail. By the way, this same field (in Northridge, CA) was incredible. My family moved to the area and I went to the field for the first time. I have never seen so many alligator lizards in one place.
