what should i do with this garter?

coluberking25 Jun 26, 2006 09:02 PM

So I found this eastern garter snake at a friend's house the other day(last Tuesday). It looked as if it had some healing scratches(like scales peeles away) but aside from that it seems ok. The friend didn't want it in his backyard(which is in a different development than my place). What should I do with this cool little critter?

You have two choices. You can a) let the little guy/girl go or b)keep it as a pet. Garter Snakes are relatively straight forward to care for.

If the scratches appear to be infected, red, swollen, warm or seem painful I'd take the snake to a vet. Other than that I think you're fine.

Well I caught it in a different development in the same town, and the family did not want it there. Couldn't it be somewhat dangerous releasing it in an area not even 10 minutes away? I do know I have garter snakes in my area of town.

PS-Ate her first worm today (Figure it's a she because it's pretty big, almost 2 feet I'd say). She seems to be doing fine, she eagerly devoured the worm, and when I dropped another worm in, she struck at my hand.

garters are among the toughest and most adaptable of snakes. If you can find a wilderness area anywhere nearby with a water source, just release it. It will be fine.
