South Carolina questions

mikefuture Jun 26, 2006 09:05 PM

I am toying with the idea of making a trip down to South Carolina. Now, my non-herping friends say they will go (and therefore, make it a cheaper trip) if we go to Myrtle Beach. So, the question is : Is Myrtle Beach State Park and/or the surrounding area a good herping destination? Any tips about time of year and common species would be greatly appreciated.

Oh wow... are you kidding? You are in prime snaking territory if you have a bike.... lol. Just take rt. 17 south a few miles (maybe 10 minutes) and you're in prime territory. If you're into lifting stuff, stay east of 17. Every left turn (while heading south) seemed to have a spot afew years ago. I'm sure it's quite the same today. Expect anything from Corn snakes, Hognose, Kings, Mole Kings and Watersnakes to Copperheads (quite common), Water Moccasins and even Canbebrakes fairly frequently.

Great tip... there was a spot on the east side of 17 in McClelanville that had tons of great tin to life. It was just north of a Teaxaco gas station. It was an abandoned field with many pieces of tin to lift. Always good for at least one snake.. sometimes a few.

Good luck... now i'm going searching for Kark Cauffelds famous snake hunting spot... Crossley! (as in "Crossley Pines and Corns)! Wish me luck... i've been searching for it for years.

I will help you look for the fields if you need help. I live in Wilmington and I go down that way about twice a month ( when I'm not deployed)to hang out at Walkatee Zoo. I almost have it zeroed in. ( I know one of the spots has a mod. home lot on it now but there should be someting in the woods behind it! let me know my email is blueselaphe@yahoo.com i get back from Iraq in the early part of the next year..Blue
