Pics and info on my iguana

geicogecko Jun 26, 2006 11:54 PM

Well I haven't been on this forum in a year so I decided to update on my iguana named Luna. He is a male and he is 5 years old going on 6.. anyway the reason for my post is that I'm wondering why he is so small for his age. I assume he is a full grown iguana at this age but he seems to be really small compared to the other full grown iguanas on this site. He is very healthy and has never had any health problems and I feed him the right diet with calcium dusted on it daily. I'm wondering if iguanas from certain areas are just smaller than others or maybe there IS something wrong with his growth. BTW he has free run of the house since he turned 1 so it isn't because he was kept in something small. I haven't measured him from head to tail because his tail has been broken and regrown.

well, your iguana looks about the same size as my lizzy and he is 3 yrs old, however yours has a much smaller nose, and circle thingy ( cant'think of the name of it)
that would make me assume that he is a she, that would explain why so small!

Well for years I thought he was a female until he started to develope the hemipenis buldges and his pores on his legs are really big. He doesn't ACT like a male, he isn't agressive at all and has never bitten anyone.. ever nor has he tried. He turns bright orange during mating season and gets a little jumpy towards colored shirts but besides that he acts like a big sissy girl. He acts like he has no intrest in the various iguana stuffed animals I've shown him, he'll get on top of it but then he goes to sleep lol.
I had kept him with a female iguana up until they were both two but she pushed him around and would scare him off with her posing so I had to give her to a friend that ran an animal shelter.
Anyway he has no health problems so I guess it's just genetics.

Genetics does effect their size.
But
How big is he? SVL?
What is his temperatures?--Basking? Ambient? Cool Spot? Night time?
What UVB lights are you using?

I'm not sure how big he is snount to vent, at the moment he is outside. He is a free ranging iguana and he stays outside in the sun most of the time, when it gets too hot he comes to the back door and scratches and we let him in. So we don't keep any bulbs or anything for him since he gets everything from the sun. I will try to measure him when he comes in from outside this evening.

OK nm I got his measurement it's 15 inches snout to vent

Well he does seem small but if the diet, temps and UVB are good then it could be genetics. What has you vet said about his size?

I wouldn't worry about him at all he looks great! Like everyone else said genetics have a great effect on size shape etc etc. I wouldn't worry at all and seeing he is doing so well (spoiled!) which is great to see, you should just love him and leave the worrying behind!
