Sunday-Monday report

JohnOH Jun 27, 2006 11:44 AM

I left Abilene around 4Pm Monday and headed south to Del Rio. I saw NO herps on the way down. Hwy 277 from Edwards County south to around Red Bluff showed signes of earlier light rains. Temps at 7PM at Buffalo creek were 76F.
I stopped at walmart to gas up and buy a few supples. Then I stopped by Motel 6 to meet with two austinites, Troy W and his friend Kevin. Owing to the unfavorable weather conditions (very high barometer, no wind) I invited Troy to ride with me - no sense in wasting gas.
We left Del Rio a bit after 8PM and headed west toward Langtry, got there around 9PM, perfect time to start looking.
We hunted our way west into Terrell county. In Eastern terrell we spotted a 24" dark male on a rockcut. Troy pulled it off and was a babbling idiot for a couple minutes. I took a few minutes to load my camera and put new batteries in the flash, then took some pics of Troy and the snake in front of the rock cut (my digital camera was home.)
We continued westward to about half a mile past Palma Draw, turned around and hunted back toward Langtry. We saw another vehicle with 3 hunters (dad and sons) who had seen a longnose.
A bit after 2AM I transferred Troy to Kevin's car and headed westward. About 2:15 AM I saw something back in a hole that u-turned before I could see what it was. I'm assuming night snake since it appeared light brownish.
a bit after 3AM I saw a very light bull snake partway out of a hole in a cut east of Sanderson. Temp. at the time was 73F.
I stopped in Sanderson for a while to BS with some herpers, then went to the 9 mile hill. Temp at the top was 63F so I quit for the night.
As far as I know there were 3 alterna found Sun. night - mine, the one Troy H. found and one off black gap.
Monday I started out of Sanderson around 8PM and took a liesurly drive toward Dryden and SR 349 in the hopes of seeing a kennerlyi. at 8:55 I found a beautiful female molossus abour 20 miles N. of Dryden, didn't touch her. I continued N. to Sheffield, then to Iraan, then east out of Iraan on 190, then N. to Barnhart, Steriling city and Colorado City where I got on I-20 and went home.
Temps were reading 60-65 after 11PM
I Did check out a few of the big cuts E. of Iraan on 190, saw nothing. Has anyone ever found anything on them?

Good report John. Glad to see you active on the forums and in the field. Any more trips out this year?

John, I used to hunt those cuts east of Iraan on my way out (trips where I left DFW after work) . . . all I've found there (to speak of) are lepidus.

I hunted every single cut on 190 E of Iraan on Sat night and saw NOTHING. I had the road to myself, which was nice, but I was pretty bummed to say the least that I didn't see but one DOR atrox...and I drove all the way from Wichita Falls just for one night...I heard 190 is good for leps. Is that true?

How long have you been in Wichita Falls, Max?

maxrr Jun 28, 2006 05:12 PM

About a year now...I actually emailed you a couple months ago asking some questions (that you answered, thank you!). I probably used Ryan as my name (I go by both). How long you been here?
