for wood from outside I put the smaller peices in the oven on a cookie sheet at 200 degrees for about half hour to 45 minutes. This kills any bugs. If its bigger pieces I use a 20 percent bleach solution and spray it on the wood then sundry.
As for a 50 gallon aquarium it is not optimal. They make 50 gallon reptile tanks with more floor space (perfecto brand) they alos make a 70 gallon size thats great. I have an old display case that I got second hand that works well. good luck.

not sure what you mean by bleaching wood from the outside. If you mean how to sterlize wood found outside, there are two was you can do it. If the piece of wood is small enough to fit in your oven, bake at 200F for about an hour or two, watching to make sure thinner areas don't start to burn.

The second method is to soak the wood in a bleach solution (one part bleach to 100 parts water) for about half an hour, rinse the wood really well several times then let air dry in a well ventilated area for 24 hours or more if needed.
