Two new smiling geckos...

LizardLuva Jun 27, 2006 09:12 PM

Hello everyone! I am not exactly new to the forum, i have actually been looking for herps for a while, but my mom seems to be an impulse buyer, so we ended up with two new leopard geckos:

(I personally have no clue exactly what morphs they are; of course i know that one is albino, but not what strain)

I do have a few question though:

1. What age can you estimate these little ones to be at?

2. They are currently both housed in a 5.5 gallon tank, i was wondering when to move them to a 10 gallon...and when to separate them?

3. The "normal" is extensively 'hanging out' in the humid hide, is this normal or at least alright?

4. When they are split up, will they both use 'the bathroom' in the same general area that they are now in the small tank?

Thanks in advance

Hi, congrats those guys are sure cute. I would think they are between 8 and 12 weeks maybe..probably closer to 8. I would keep them in the 5.5 for awhile. It will take a few days for them to get used to their surroundings and you also need to make sure they are eating well before moving them. I had a bad experience with baby albinos a while back. I didn't know that they needed to be in a small enclosure and I also didn't know that baby albinos are light sensitive for the first 3 months of their lives. All my leopards, I have 10, love their humid hides and tend to use them as a regular hide spot. It's totally normal. Well good luck, anymore questions just ask.

I think your albino is a rainwater or las vegas phase albino and I'm not sure that the normal is normal either. Looks a little tremperish to me. Lovely kids though.
The humid hide is fine.
The bathroom thing is a 50/50 thing. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.
I'll defer to the experts on moving and separating them because the only reasons I can see to separate them is (1) if you got them from two different tanks in the first place. Then they would need to be quarantined for health reasons. The only other reasons to separate would be (2) if they are both males or (3) you have one of each and you don't want babies.
I put mine straight into a 20 gallon tank with plenty of hides so they can feel secure in small spaces within the larger tank.
Enjoy them and please let us know how you and they make out in life. Big props to your impulse buying mom!
