Sudden Death.....?

phiber_optikx Jun 27, 2006 11:31 PM

Onyx passed away yesterday.... I had given him to a friend although I am sure it is not his fualt. He regurgitated his last meal with me and I was very thorough with his new owner about what precautions to take and to wait and feed him. He offered him a pinky Friday and said he took it with gusto (like always) and he also had not handled him since his first regurge (10 days prior) He said he checked on him yesterday and there was a regurged pinky and a dead Onyx..... It is not common for snakes to die after 2 regurges and so suddeny with no other obvious side effects. I am wondering why this could have happened. The other thing that I find weird is that this is EXACTLY how Butters died (those of you that remember...) Onyx was kept in the same tank Butters was but I took precautions (bleached EVERYTHING 3x) and Onyx had been in this tank for 7 months or so.... can anyone give me an idea as to what might be going on? Both snakes were kept on repti-bark and were under 10". Thanks for any help. BTW I did give a full refund

Could it have possibly been impaction? If the snake was not able to pass its food, that might do it. Was it deficating ok?

I had been just a bit worried when you introduced a wild animal to your collection (am I correct about the one black rat?) hoping that you were taking ongoing precautions, even after a quarantine period, to make sure that there was ZERO cross-contamination. Any thoughts on this? Duffy

I was wondering if I was being paranoid, but whenever I caught a wild snake (and I have caught a couple of very nice looking natural corns) I just let them go because I was concerned about possibly introducing things to my farm raised corns. I guess it is a valid problem.

If it were a case of cross contamination then Onyx would have been the last to go.... I didn't hold him often and he was the farthest from her cage. No other signs with any other snakes. Even Molly is doing well.

sometimes when snakes regurge fluid gets in their lungs. I'm sure thats why it died.

The best way to evaluate cause of death is to do a necropsy. If you still have the body, keep it refrigerated or frozen until you can arrange a schedule with your vet. My vet helped me to necropsy Mr T, which established a definitive COD - at no charge I might add.

Sorry for Onyxx.

Best Regards,
