More Color to Come...

ETChipotle Aug 01, 2003 06:23 PM

Here's Sunbeam just before a shed. He's the naughty boy who got loose the this week under the neighbor's steps, and I noosed him to get him back.

What do you suppose is under this layer of skin?

Oh by the way, does it work to feed Fireflies to your collared lizards to brighten them up?

overlapp. I know because I live maybe five miles from Witchita mountain Wildlife Reserve, where there are tons of collareds, and fireflies are very aboundant there. I have read though that most North American species will not eat fireflies, (instinct thing, or maybe they know more than we think they do.) but I would not find out if collareds are on the list.

Crawling around on a plant or something, and that's probably all it would take to become lizard food if the lizard didn't have some reason to not eat you.

....probably has rabies, and like the skunk, possum, or raccoon, should be avoided.

...perhaps its an African firefly? I read this paper on them once...

==============

GUARD #1: Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?

ARTHUR: Not at all, they could be carried.

GUARD #1: What -- a swallow carrying a coconut?

ARTHUR: It could grip it by the husk!

GUARD #1: It's not a question of where he grips it! It's a simple question of weight ratios! A five ounce bird could not carry a 1 pound coconut.

ARTHUR: Well, it doesn't matter. Will you go and tell your master that Arthur from the Court of Camelot is here.

GUARD #1: Listen, in order to maintain air-speed velocity, a swallow needs to beat its wings 43 times every second, right?

ARTHUR: Please!

GUARD #1: Am I right?

ARTHUR: I'm not interested!

GUARD #2: It could be carried by an African swallow!

GUARD #1: Oh, yeah, an African swallow maybe, but not a European swallow, that's my point.

GUARD #2: Oh, yeah, I agree with that...

ARTHUR: Will you ask your master if he wants to join my court at Camelot?!

GUARD #1: But then of course African swallows are not migratory.

GUARD #2: Oh, yeah...

GUARD #1: So they couldn't bring a coconut back anyway...

[clop clop]

GUARD #2: Wait a minute -- supposing two swallows carried it together?

GUARD #1: No, they'd have to have it on a line.

GUARD #2: Well, simple! They'd just use a strand of creeper!

GUARD #1: What, held under the dorsal guiding feathers?

GUARD #2: Well, why not?

Certainly all the proof I need on the subject of whether or not a lightning bug can carry rabies!

I do not think collared lizards will even eat fireflies. Nonnative lizards drop like flies.

...collareds not being active when the fireflies ARE....
They work different shifts, probably don't meet socially.

I don't know, have you ever seen a firefly in the day? Theres a good reason. But if their never active during the day, how come diurnial lizards all over the country are droping after eating them? They don't hunt at night but they still eat them.

....that are reported as dying due to ingestion of lightnin' bugs are captives. Captives that live in enclosures of some kind, probably outdoors and maybe in a zoo type setting. Enclosures with lights. Bright UVB-type sources that may attract bugs. Bugs that may become active before the captive enclosure's lights are timed to cycle off, irrespective of the current daylength. Enclosures that can possibly trap bugs within easy proximity of aggressive feeders. Aggressive feeders that snap first and ask questions later. If there is a later.

Later!

Captive lizards put OUTSIDE for air and natural UVB die of firefly. (during the day)
