My 4 year old baby beardie passes away

tom69 Jun 28, 2006 11:24 AM

On a beautiful summer day, my beardie was enjoying himself in his outside area basking away and enjoying the day. I would periodically check on him to be sure that everything was OK. Then, one time I checked on him, he was on his back and had passed away. I was so saddened and shocked. He had been normal in every way. He was eating every day and he was going to the bathroom regularly. He looked perfectly healthy. He weighed about 1 pound and again, showed no signs of a problem. I am certain that he was not bitten by any bees or other insects. I watched him quite carefully. One thing, the last 3-4 months, he quit eating crickets. I figured he was just spoiled and preferred his other veggies/fruit/pellet foods that I hand fed him each day. I am just trying to understand what may have caused his sudden passing. Could it have been a seizure, heart attack or something else. I adopted him at about 5 months old because he was not being cared for the way I would have expected an animal to be cared for. I quickly grew quite fond to him. They are very wonderful animals. I appreciate your responses.

Only sure way to know for sure what killed your dragon is to get a necropsy done. To do this you have to keep the dragon refrigerated till you can get him to a vet to do the necropsy.

sorry for your loss, it sounds like you did everything right and he was a good weight. Not eating crickets for an adult isn't a bad thing as long as he was eating his veggies and pellets regularly. The only thing I could see that would strike him so fast is he may have eaten a firefly. These little bugs are very toxic to bearded dragons though I don't know if they would have killed one so quickly.

Necropsy is probably the best thing to do, to know for certain what ended your pets life.

you mentioned he was outside? what type of enclosure was he in? if it was glass or even a rubbermaid container he may have "cooked" sunlight magnifies through glass and heats up rubbermaid containers to the point where its too hot and "cooks" dragons.

just a thought
