Fly PROBLEMS! and contemplating wheather to keep the turtle

shelly78 Aug 01, 2003 07:19 PM

i have severe fly problems. there is about 20 of them in my small room.my mom told me how serious fly problems can get when you have turtles ( one day she came home and couldnt see her ceiling). what should i do to get rid of the fly's with out harming the turtles?

also i have a eastern that i found a littl ewhile ago. and i think with all the fly's in my house maybe i should let it go. or maybe think about an outside enclosure. but i have 3 hunting dogs that are very interested with the turtles. does any body have an idea on a CHEAP outside enclosure that my dogs couldn't bother? right now i keep the turtle in a plastice kiddy pool.
sorry for all the questions.

the other option is to put him in the tank ( see pic below ) but i don't think it would like that.

Ummm, do you keep your windows open in the summer?
I have several hatchlings inside right now as well as a five lined skink and a brown snake and I don't have any more flies than we normally have. Maybe 2-3 get in during the day when the door is opened, and they usually stay in the kitchen until someone swats them. Anyway, I don't understand why you would have a fly problem inside.
You could get some sort of fly paper product to hang in the room. An outdoor enclosure would be better for them, however, and it should be possible to build one that is dog proof.

If your turtle enclosure is being kept clean of droppings (feces) and you aren't leaving the food out until it rots, I doubt the flies are due to your turtle. I don't notice any flies around my turtles, even when they're outside for several days. Have you seen any maggots in your turtle's cage? If not, then the flies aren't coming from there. If there are maggots in the cage, you must have some rotting organic matter in there somewhere that needs to go. How long have you had your turtle?

i don't see any magots. i have had the turtle for a month or so. it is hard to keep the turtles cage clean. i have little bark peices ( repti bark ). and it's hard to get there feces up. is there a cleaner substrate i could use?

If you keep a big dish of water in there, turtles will usually evacuate their bowels in the water after soaking a while. Do you have a soak dish in the cage?

Is this a second eastern that you have, or are you referring to "Shelly" that you acquired a month or so ago?

it's shelly

Are you going to build this yourself or will an adult be helping you?
A few folks have posted great ideas for outdoor pens (CHEAP) in the last few weeks, along with suggestions for dog-proofing.
Please take a few minutes to read them.
I can't help but have noticed that you repeat the same sorts of questions, so I've gotten the impression that you haven't really been reading the responses, which isn't really fair to those of us who are trying to help you out.

there should be a product called pest stip or fly stip, it is non pesticidal but its toxic so you have to be careful. Cut a small peice off and put it in a butter container with small holes in it. This will kill them by sent, dont use to much and dont put it directly in the cage. you should be able to get this at lowes or ace hardware. lacie
