Field Herping in Massachusetts

shambala Jun 29, 2006 07:16 PM

I will be in mass for part of a two week honeymoon... I am a big herper in the midwest and southwest, but have no experience in the northeast. I wouldn't mind seeing some herps up that way as a wedding treat. Can anyone point me toward a good area? I will be around Rockport/Gloucester. Thanks all.

DAN

Dan I live in central MA. Ponds and wet areas will have turtles, frogs and northern water snakes. Fields near woodlands and powerline cuts have most of the snake life around. But the pickings are kinda slim compared to where you're from. If you spend some time flipping AC you can expect to find eastern milks, garters, brown snakes and maybe black racers. The rarer finds are black ratsnakes and hognoses. And of course not only are they rare but they are endangered and of course protected. So are the spotted and wood turtles. I'm not a salamander guy so I don't know where to find them at this time of the year. The good news is that we've had a ton of rain in the last couple of months so maybe some stuff is still up and about. Another species that's out there is the smooth green snake but I've yet to bump into one.

Now for the warning. Deer ticks and Lyme disease are pretty rampant around here. If you're going into the field protect yourself and make sure you check afterward for ticks and also the tell-tale bulls-eye that the Lyme disease parasite produces. Lyme disease is no joke. I know, I've had it.

Good luck
John
