Serious RETF Eye Problem

MTherps Jun 29, 2006 08:26 PM

I have had my RETF for about 2.5 years and it has been very healthy until recently. I do not no whether or not Tiger (the RETF) was captive bred but he was the only survivor from a group of 5 babies. Over a month ago, I decided to renovate Tiger's setup, so I moved him and his roommate, Rocket (an unidentified frog I saved from near death at a petstore), into a 5 gallon tank so I could work. At first, they both were fairly agitated but they went back to sleep after about 15 minutes. I only used materials in the setup that I have proven are safe and I made sure to wash out the new plants. I set them free in the setup and they quickly went to the leaves.
A few nights later I was watching them and noticed a white spot on the back of Tiger's eye. Over the month I have been racing against time trying to find an answer to the problem. It has been a losing battle and the white thing has now covered his entire eye. Last night I noticed a white spot on the other. Any help will be appresiated, for I am beginning to wonder how much longer it will before Tiger is completly blind.
I will post a photo and any other needed information tomorrow

You are my only hope.

OK.. First,
You need to seperate the frogs as soon as you read this. Not becuase of the eye issue, but alot of frogs carry toxins. A frog in a petstore that cheap is going to either be a green tree frog or a cuban 9 times out of 10. Cubans are very toxic and very aggressive. Not to mention, cheap usually equals wild capture which means there is a high possibility of parisites etc..

Now, as for the eye, RETF's are notorius for eye problems. Post a pic and I may be able to help. But, I will tell you if it was my frog, I would be on my way to a vet..

Here is the actual photo of Tiger (the last post did not link properly). Sorry for the low quality. I am going to get Rocket into a new home as soon as I have an adequate home for it. Hope this helps!

Also, I live in Billings, MT, and there are no vets I would trust anywhere near here so it will be a while before I can get Tiger into a vet.

Here is a photo of Rocket. I am pretty sure Rocket is not either of the frogs you mentioned before so I hope you can figure ou what "he" is.

You may want to post this over on the dendroboard.com in their ID thread, you may have a quicker response.

I know that Tim knows what he's talking about. You should really get one or the other out of that tank, even if it's just into a rubbermaid box.

Hope that everything works out for you.

You need to get to a vet. You took in the pet, and you have a responsibility to provide it care. Do a google for information on exotic animal vets or the like. I found this page with a directory of herp societies that could be useful. http://www.herpo.com/societies.html, find a local club and contact them, they may be able to help.

Also you can contact Dr Frye via his website, and he may be able to help you.
