Screen vs. Plastic/glass housing

Slamdaccord96 Jun 30, 2006 07:38 AM

My pair of cresties are currently in a screen enclosure right now but they need a new one. Is there a preference among anyone as to which type of cage is the best? They are doing well in the screen cage but it is hard to keep clean because of all the little spaces. Also, if this has already been discussed could someone give me the link? Thanks.

There are only a couple of reasons that some people prefer glass enclosures:
1. Humidity - the screen cages make it almost impossible unless you live in the right climate (but I assume this isn't a problem for you)
2. Cleaning - I can imagine how hard the screen cages would be to clean! The glass ones are really easy.
It's really your preference as to which kind of cage you use.

I love to use screen enclosures. I keep my breeders in them. They are set up just like Repashy breeders. Screen enclosures are actually really easy to clean, just take them outside and hose them off. I also use glass aquariums and I prefer them over rubbermaids. Kritter keepers are best for juvis.

I saw one like that for clearance at a local petsmart, but it did not have doors on the side, only panels. I figured it would be too difficult to clean & access through the top only... how do you like yours? Is it difficult to reach all the way into the bottom of the tank? can it hold a "drainage" system (pebbles, screen, soil, etc) or is it better for a single-layer planting?
Sorry for all the questions, now you've got me thinking of going out to get that instead of another exo-terra... hmmm...

i'm in montana right now

anyhow

i like it alot!

the doors run almost the entire hight of the tank, so reach across, up top or down to the bottom is not a problem at all!

as for the bottom, it has solid glass sides that are about 4 inches tall by the screen doors. it is all sealed and watertight. i have a mix of cyprus mulch and bed a beast inn there right now.

hope this helps...oh and there are supposed to be screen doors and a scren top to the tank.

I have one of the Exoterra ones & I really love it. It provides a lot of air circulation because of the front design, can be accessed through the front or top, holds humidity well w/o getting stale & is really roomy. I have 2 cresties in the large size one.

this might clear something up. The "panels" are the "doors" they are removable by turning a latch, lifting and removing. I used a similar type cage years ago when I worked at a store. They are fairly nice.
