Brazilian Rainbow litter!!!

survey33 May 19, 2003 10:45 PM

Just born yesterday, 24 babies. I was fortunate enough to catch her giving birth (about 10:00 am). My 8 yr old daughter and I watched the whole thing. Also watched her eat the slugs and it seems she was helping the babies break the membranes (kind of mouthed each one. Very exciting to observe.

That's such a rare pic for me. I seen one pic of an Anaconda eating slugs and that was it until now.Great pic!

24 total in the litter, it was pretty neat to see her actually seeking out the slugs and eating them.

Wow!! How exciting!! Thanks for the pic...I can't believe she helped them and ate the slugs too. It just sounds so dog-like. It's fascinating!! Now I want one of the babies too! LOL!

Or....

Is that something only BRB's do?
Is that a rare occurence and maybe just this snake does it?

Also...

I've always admired BRB's but can't find anyone who carries the red phase. I want red adults. Do you know of anyone you can recommend who may have them available at a reasonable price? And how much different is it to care for a BRB as compared to a BCI?

I've read that boas often eat the slugs, it's probably a good source of nourishment for them and in nature might be so as to not attract scavengers. Can't say for sure if they all do it though, this was my first clutch of boas. I've bred many colubrid snakes and Ball pythons but these were a first.

I don't have any BCI, they of course stay smaller and require a higher humidity level. Beyond that you should contact some others that are more experienced. russ lockenwitz, RioBravoReptiles, and Jeff Clark are some of the names I follow on this forum and seem very knowledgable (I'm sure there are more).

Survey33,
. Congratulations, that is a great PIC. I have never seen the females mouth the babies. I have seen them sort of plow through the pile like they are looking for slugs to eat. It may be that they were helping the babies to escape from the membranes though. This is one of my females eating slugs after laying lots of slugs and only a few babies.

excellant Photo, I have heard people speak of snakes eating their own slugs and even heard it mentioned on a animal, snake breeding show on TV, but in all the years that I have been breeding I have never seen any of my animals even look at a slug as if it would be a meal? I was wondering if any other Boa Constrictor breeders have seen it happen with their boas? Very cool photo with nature at it's finest (the babies) and it's grossest (eating the slugs LOL)
Thanks for sharing it.
