My 4 year old baby beardie passes away

tom69 Jun 30, 2006 01:50 PM

Thanks for the reply. My beardie was in an open grassy area enclosed by wire fencing. That day the temperature was about 80 degrees with a nice breeze. There were no fireflies or other insects present that I know of. Looking back at his last 6 months of life before he passed away, I also noticed him seeming to enjoy lying on his backside in a comfortable position. Sometimes I would pet him and put him back on his stomach. Other times, I would let him roll over by himself. I am now wondering if in reality, he was hurting in some way that I was not able to detect. After all, he seemed happy, and just enjoying himself. I did not have an autopsy done. At the time I didn't think it would be appropriate for me. I was just too saddened.

I was thinking the same thing, liver or kidney problems. My beardie seemed to be drinking water just fine after I adopted him at about 6 months of age. If it was a kidney problem, what other signs would one see? What would cause kidney problems? Also, what would be signs of liver problems and what might cause that type of a problem? I was really attached to my little beardie, he was treated like a King. Right now, I would have a hard time getting another one and face these type of unknown tragedies that take place without having more knowledge.

As time went by, I was able to get my beardie to eat almost every day. Once he was properly warmed up, he would eat even in the middle of winter. Greens were always somewhat of a problem. Over time, I tried just about every type of green veggies that were recommended for beardies. Sometimes he would eat them and in many cases he would not. Of all the things, the food he liked most were the Rex bearded dragon pellets. I would pre-moisten them and he really seemed to like them most. Prey food such as crickets, I would only offer them to him about 2 times per week, maybe 3 times per week on occasion. As time went by, he preferred to ignore the crickets and just eat the pellets, fruits (apple & Canteloupe mostly) and on occasion green veggies. Looking back, I had thought that my beardie would have lived for 8-10 years. Now I think that somewhere something went wrong. Maybe it was just genetics?

Is it normal for beardies to twitch. About 1 year before he died I noticed that maybe once a minute, he would twitch. Just wanted to mention this. He did not do it his whole life then one day a twitch developed.
