egg help

mlove Jun 30, 2006 05:45 PM

Hi, I have three female collareds that were purchased last week. Apparently they are gravid because I found one egg late last night. I'm trying to locate a Hovabator but it may be a few days before it arrives. Is there any way to incubate them or help them in their enclosure without a Hovabator?

You can use any deli-cup sized container, and fill it with dampened vermiculite...I think Tom Greb said it best when he said he soaks it with water and then wrings all the water back out that he can by squeezing it. Just nestle the egg in the vermiculite (1/2 in and 1/2 out). It is important to keep the same position of the egg. If you see a pinkish color, put that side up. I would cover the container, and leave a hole about the size of a nickel in the center. If condensation forms a lot of water drops, make the hole larger...if the eggs starts to dimple, just add a a tiny bit more water around the egg...not on the egg.

Fine a warm area in your house. until you are able to make an incubator or purchase your hovabator. The important thing right now it to get the egg in the right humid environment. The room temps shouldn't hurt it, but will prolong develoment.

Best of luck,

J
