Enclosure Question For 40" JCP...?

Dan6971 Jun 30, 2006 08:12 PM

"Fluffy" is now a year-old and about 40 inches long.

I wanted to upgrade him from a 10 gallon tank to a 20 gallon tank.

There are 2 types of twenty gallon tanks available - one that is wider and one that is taller. Which one would be best?

Also, there are 29 gallon tanks - would that be a better idea, than the 20 gallon tanks?

At 40", I'd be thinking about something more like a 40 gallon breeder to give him a bit of growing room. He'll likely outgrow a 20 gallon long by winter.

Really? So a 20 Gallon tank is way too small?

Maybe I should go to the reptile show in 10 days and get one there...?

I think a 20 gallon long would be fine for a 40" snake today, it's just that I think your snake will be maybe 4 1/2 ' by the end of the year and a 20 would be small. Rather than having to buy another tank at the end of the year, I'd just buy a larger one now.

FYI, I've had pretty good luck finding used screened reptile tanks on my local Craigslist. See http://craigslist.org/ and select your city. Look under Pets and Forsale.

Thanks Deg...

Yeah, I thought that 40 gallons might be too large.

Should I get him a 29 or 30 gallon now?

Would that be smarter?

if you don't mind me jumping in here. when i first got my JCP he was around 3 foot. i started him in a 20 long. he very quickly grew out of that with in a couple months. then i went to the 40 gallon breeder size. he was much happier till he out grew that after he was like 5 foot. now he is 7 foot if not longer and housed in an 80 gallon tank.
i think fluffy would be fine in the 40 gallon breeder. they are active snakes and like to climb around so have lots of branches in there. if for some reason he finds it overwhelmingly to big and stops eating then you can go with a 20. this is just my exp. my 20 gallon long didn't go to waste as i found another snake to put in there.
well, just my 2 cents. oh, p.s. just a note..when i got my JCP he was eating adult mice. once i got him on rats he ZOOMED in size.

Thanks, I shall consider that.

JCP's aren't like Bloods or other snakes that get finicky in large enclosures. I think the bigger the better. I have a female that is now over 8ft and she's in a 4'x 4' x 2.5' enclosure which seems rather small for her. JCP's are so active that they can do well with as much room as possible, and at 40", you might as well buy a cage big enough for it to live in the rest of its life. As posted earlier, craigslist is great for finding reptile cages. I bought my cage with the above dimensions, made out of melamine and has glass in the doors for $75.00. Good luck, Eric-

I have a huge, very tall one, but he is still very small. He's 40", but very thin and little - just long.

I can get him something in between - but what size?

I already have a HUGE, tall enclosure that I got at a reptile show from GlassCages.com and it was REALLY cheap - like $40.
