I would like them better with black pupils, i was told that is what they originally had, what happened?

Steve_Craig Jul 01, 2006 11:07 AM

That the flash makes the eye appear to be red, when in fact it is a black/bluish color.

Steve

JETZEN Jul 01, 2006 11:19 AM

you may be correct about that, thanks for reminding me about the redeye/flash factor.

Kerby... Jul 01, 2006 04:42 PM

The Blue-eyed Blondes don't have blue eyes....of course the Davis Black-Bellies don't have black bellies either.

The BEB have red eyes, although very dark. Non-albinos can have red as well (cause I have some). There are numerous different HYPOMELANISMS out there, albino is included by definition. The eye color can vary.

Now in normal cal kings there is some light blue/gray around the pupil. Nothing is exact.

But I did get mine from VIVID Reptiles directly.

Well, you learn something new everyday. I had always believed that they had blue eyes becasue on Vivid's website, Tim describes the founding male in San Diego county (Elfin Forest) as having "gorgeous deep blue eyes". Oh well, regardless of eye color, still one of the best looking Cal. kings, IMO.

Also I have said in the past that the BEB might just be a dark Lavender....after having acquired a pair of BEB I have changed my mind. BUT......I will be breeding them together in the future to prove this out...one way or the other.

His pictures also show the dark red pupil. I'm sure that with age mine might darken up some.

info, so they don't have blue iris's w/black pupils, they actually have drk red iris's w/ red pupils. I wonder where i got the idea that they have blue eyes?
And do you know if the original BEB was collected in a family group(1.2)or just a single individual that was selectivly bred.

Not trying to start a fight just curious.

Kerby... Jul 01, 2006 09:17 PM

On VIVID'S website it says that they came from a single wild-caught male from the early 1990's and that they have BLUE eyes.

I got mine from VIVID and he says he has NOT outcrossed them, ....but mine have dark red eyes????

Attached is a photo that I scanned for Brian Hubbs in the late 1990's. He caught this snake in the 1980's.

Looks like a BEB to me.

Plus, they have now been bred to other cal king morphs and recessive genes since then...so there are sure to be varities today.

And I will be adding the BEB to the mix of other recessive genes that I have...ONLY I will identify them accordingly...others may not. Just check the classifieds; a Ghost being called a BLONDE; a normal aberrant being called a Blue-Eyed Blonde.

Okay, let me see if have this right , Vivid says he did not outcross the BEB line, well then how did he start the BEB line if he only originaly had one male? Unless he bred the male to a typical female preferably of the San Diego area. Which would still be outcrossing.

outcrossing by definition:
To breed (animals) that belong to different strains of the same breed.

And yes that is odd that Vivid is marketing BEB @ $185 ea, When they actually have red eyes, REB?

And yes the classifieds are all screwed up with sellers tagging their B.S. stock with other peoples line names

One more thing, out of curiousity where did Brian find that Lt.phase cal?

Thanks.........

Kerby... Jul 01, 2006 10:35 PM

Outcross..... I'm not sure if he used females from that same area or not.

I'm not sure of the locale where Brian found it. I do know that Brian said a lot of the locale info in David Perlowin's book was incorrect (for snakes that had Brian Hubbs' name with it).

Well anyway, if i was actin like a upstart, sorry, and that is a screamer pr. of blondes, red eyed or blue eyed!
later...

Kerby... Jul 02, 2006 12:31 AM

I like most Blondes.

Kerby...

zach_whitman Jul 02, 2006 12:56 PM

that the original male was bred to a group of females that all apeared normal and were from the same area in san diego. None gave BEBs in the first generation.

Aaron Jul 03, 2006 10:53 PM

Hey Jetzen as Kerby mentioned many normal Cal Kings can have blueish iris'. This is the part surrounding the pupil and the blueish apparently has nothing to do with hypomelanism as I too have seen it in normal Cals. It is quite likely the original wild caught had bluish iris' and Tim thought it was a catchy name.

JETZEN Jul 04, 2006 08:19 AM

That's what i thought.

zach_whitman Jul 01, 2006 10:46 AM

I have got to get some of those.

Is the red eye just from the flash?

Kerby... Jul 01, 2006 05:44 PM

They have dark red eyes.

I finally got a pair from VIVID last year. I will be breeding them in 2008 for the first time.
