using acrylic paint?

Reptile_Fan2002 Jun 30, 2006 10:46 PM

I'm planning on building a few corn snake cages out of birch plywood and using frameless door like using a plexiglass. Has anyone ever used outside house acrylic paint on wooden cages? and is it recommanded? thanks let me know. Paul

How about "milk" paint, made from you know what. Non-toxic and mix your own colors. Seal it with a few coats of Behlen's salad bowl finish, also non-toxic. Check google for milk paint dealers.

Paul, for a cornsnake cage I think you could get away with acrylic paint. But I would use a scrap piece of vinyl flooring or expanded PVC sign board for the floor of the cage.

This may sound counter-intuitive, but don't use an exterior paint for a reptile cage. Ironically, they are actually less water resistant they an interior paint. They are designed to be flexible and UV resistant which actually decreases water and abrasion resistance.

Instead find a scrubbable high gloss acrylic made for bathrooms, kitchens, etc. It won't be the most durable surface in the world but it will be fairly easy to touch up every couple of years.
