trimming toenails

hashar Jul 01, 2006 10:04 AM

Hi everybody. I have a 2year old boy and his nails are starting to really curl under and there very sharp. He's very very tame and will let me do just about anything. Does anybody trim toenails and how so?

I have trimmed dragon toenails before and it's not really difficult to do at all. You can use cat nail clippers or really sharp human toenail clippers. The only real thing you have to watch for is cutting too much nail off at once and cutting into the quick. The quick is the living part of the nail and can be seen as a pinkish area growing from teh toe into the nail. With most dragons you can see it easily enough when looking at the nail from the side. Just trim the nail after the quick but not too close to it. You want to leave some nail behind to protect the quick.

If you do accidently nip the quick and the nail bleeds, use cornstarch or a septic pen (or whatever they are called) to stop the bleeding.

I kept trimming toenails in this way and on my beardie you can really see the living part of the nail so I managed not to cut it but although he was tame he hated me cutting his toenails so I have put a couple of rocks in his tank (well cleaned of course) and now his nails stay down with him running up onto them when he is geting down from his hammock and wants feeding. But like I mentioned I gave them a really good clean when I put them in and still clean the regular to make sure they are safe.So if your beardie doesn;t like his nails cutting you could try this.

I do have clean rocks in his tank that he climbs on all the time but really don't help in filing down his nails. I'll try using mini clippers and be very careful about the quick. Thanks so much for your advice.

Thanks so much for your advice. I do have mini rabbit and guinea pig toenail clippers that I will try using. Wish me luck!
