Snakes between 8-11 feet.

bigwizzkid Jul 01, 2006 02:04 PM

Im sure this is an odd question, but im trying to make a list of all the snakes between 8 and 11 feet at full maturity. I ask this because i have a love for larger snakes, but at the same time i know my limits. I will, at least in the near futue, and possibly never, have room for and the ability to properly take care of something like a burm who can reach 20 feet. Anyone who can add to my list it would be greatly appritiated.

There is nothing odd about your question. There are many resources you can consult for the information you seek. Start with one of the better field guides such as Audobon or Peterson. This will give you lots of info on US snakes. You should statr there before you go international.

Just to get you started, here are some US Snakes you should look up:

Drymarchon
Pituophis,
Elaphe,
Masticophis

Have fun!

Very few US snakes exceed 8 feet in length.

Some Pituophis (I think Bull snake - P. Catenifer Sayi - but not positive) have barely exceeded 8 feet, none to 8 feet AFAIK.

I think Eastern Indigo does but again not positive.

I suspect some of the central/south american boas are more likely what is sought.

You are correct, the US genera listed above average less than 8 ft. However, they all have wild caught records of 8 ft (96 inches or more).

103 1/2 inches Eastern Indigo Drymarchon couperi
102 1/4 inches Texas Indigo D. corias erebennus
102 /- inches Eastern Coachwhip Masticophis flagellum flagellum
101 inches Black Ratsnake Elaphe obsoleta obsoleta
100 inches Bullsnake Pitophis melanoluceus sayi

These are all impressively large serpents - even if wild 8 ft monsters are rare, CB individuals can exceed the WC records.

One other US snake just makes it to 8 ft - but is NOT recommended for a pet!

96 inches Eastern Diamondback Crotalus adamanteous

There are several Central and South American colubrid snakes that can exceed 8 ft with more frequency, including other Drymarchon ssps, Spilotes, and possibly the Mussarana.

And, of course, several races of Boa Constrictor.

for colubrids: most pits (bulls/pines/gophers), black milks, idigos, and some asian rats.

for boids: rock pythons?, scrubs, maybe some carpets, red tail boas, and anacondas

anaconda... MAYBE a yellow anaconda, that's a male. Then MAYBE... A rock and retic, only if they have extreme dwarfism lol. A few carpets may get about 8 feet or so. I THINK costals are the biggest of the carpets, not sure. I personally have a Jungle cause they don't get really big, over 10 feet (my personal limit).

I have personally never seen a male yellow even hit 10 feet, much less outgrow 11. and i've never personally seen a female beat 13, and very few any more then 11. Not that i am an all knowing source, that just seemed like a rather "smart" remark without cause. No need for that especially when people are just trying to be helpfull and answer my question, wich you failed to do at all.

now that you mention it i have seen 8-11 foot scrubs, retics, anacondas, burms, and afrocks. i believe they were called yearlings. joking aside, if you are looking for that particular size i know that the coastal carpets get to be around that area as well do the "true" redtails (surinames, guyanans, etc). ive heard of some female dumeril's getting to be around 8 but generally they max at about 7-8. im not sure about the less sought after herps, such as the papuans, macklotts, boelen's, savus, white lipped, hog islands, soloman islands, bolivians, and tumbes. individual research on the type that interests you is the best bet. try going to http://markmlucas.com/ and checking out his galleries on many boas, pythons, and colubrids. find the ones you like and do your research from there. good luck.

Papuans and Boelens go over 11, MacLotts are close to 8 at max. Coastals (my pair are 8') Black Heads stop around 10, savus don't hit 8, Diamonds and jungles do 8'. Olives go over 11. Asian rats go over 10'. Spilotes go over 8'. A HUGE redtail is 10', and quite bulky. Scrubs, rocks, burms, retics, green anacondas all go way over 11'. Yellows are between 8-11. Black mambas, bushmasters, lol. King cobras go a BIT bigger.
