I don't know much about them, aside from the fact that you have to have a permit to get them outside of africa. I guess the best way to get info would be to google them? Sorry if im not much help. I have a limited knowledge of them if you want any basic information.

At the largest they get about 4 feet in length. They have no, or very small teeth. They are not currently avaliable captive bred to any extent, so it is only possible to obtain WC specimens. They are aggressive, and can be very hard to feed if not adults. they usually only eat once a month, and are known to gorge themselves. They will have a 2 day feeding period, so for 2 days after there first mean they will still eat, but not after that period untill after they have deficated. they are usually brownish in color, with minimal markings. Sorry, thats about all i know. Again, you could always google Dasypeltis.

Really? My research told me the opposite haha. Well, not that they were bad breeders, just that they werent being bred outside of south africa, and couldn't be sold to anyone without a permit. I could be totally wrong however, as i said, my information is very limited.

animals.com usually has some for sale and you could probably e-mail them for info. Juveniles are tough to care for and usually only accept small eggs such as those from quail. If you get one get a sub-adult or adult. they are from Africa so they require somewhat arid temperatures. They are supposed to be fun to watch eat because they eat some thing 5 times the size of their heads.

Hatchling egg eaters will only take finch eggs or other eggs of the same size.

Most dasypeltis species will end up taking quail eggs as adults (maybe small chicken eggs as large adults), but not D. medici - only really large adults have been reported taking quail eggs, usually they only take finch, parakeet, dove, and other eggs of birds that nest in trees and have relatively thin-shelled eggs.

There are very few cb dasypeltis available. They breed easily, but since it's so hard to feed hatchlings, few people breed them.

There is an egg-eater yahoo group worth checking out if you're interested in getting one. Its archives and current members are the best source of information I've found online.

I have five - two D. medici (first pic) and three D. scabra (second pic). All are eating, but I'm getting rid of the D. medici (finally found someone to take them) - too hard to feed. Even the D. scabra I've got are pickier than I had been expecting.

By pickier do you mean as in only eating like quail eggs or do they do like a ball and just up and refuse to eat all together? If I were to get some of these guys it would be down the road, but they are neat. I'd also have to talk with the people I found with google and make sure they still are selling finch eggs. Any clue if it matters if the egg is fertile? I mainly find that they have infertile finch eggs for sale.
