Pet store pricing?????

jos Jul 02, 2006 12:56 AM

I am looking to supplement my Bearded Dragon addiction and their 5000 a month cricket addiction by selling my babies (which is killing me)....but I am at a loss for pricing. Everything seems to vary so much, and obviously Beardies are graded on appearance, but I also challenged with a Canadian market and the lack of Canadian classifieds. My male is a Orange sandfire and my female is a Hypo I know that I won't get as much from the pet store as I would on a classified but right now it seems easier; and I know that the pet store is very reputable amongst local breeders...just wondering what anyone’s experiences have been or if anyone can help me with pricing and pricing in bulk as I am fairly new to the selling aspect of breeding.

Thanks for any help,
Jos

Bearded dragons do show up occaisonally in the Canadian classifieds at www.kingsnake.ca. Pricing for bearded dragons in Canada range depending on their coloration. Most people are willing to pay more for a nicely colored baby but for the most part lightly colored dragons fall within $65-$100 price range. In petstores, the prices are much higher, way too over priced in my opinion. My suggestion would be to purchase a short time classified account for kingsnake.ca and post there, or rent a table at a reptile show being held in your area and try to sell them there. There are also some other websites on the net that allow free classifieds which you could search for and post on.

Though I haven't sold any animal to a petstore to sell, most won't pay full price for babies anyway and not all petstores will buy animals from individual breeders, perferring instead using wholesellers. However, if the petstore you are thinking of using offers a good price, then by all means go for it. Just keep in mind that most petstores sell their animals at 2-3 times the cost they paid for them.
