Coachwhip Encounter...

ADAMS Jul 02, 2006 10:41 AM

While riding my 4-wheeler yesterday, I came upon a large, coachwhip, which stopped when I approached on my atv. I was able to get off and get on the ground where I sat and just watched the snake. I'd guess it was about 5' long and was black for about 2/3 down it's length where it took on a tan color.

I live in East Texas and this was the 3rd coachwhip I've gotten close to on my land. I sat and watched the snake for about 20 minutes without either of us moving. I began to try to get closer and noticed to orange highlights on its head and the orange color of its eyes. What a beautiful snake!

I guess I got a little too close for the snakes comfort as it slowly began moving away...slow turned to fast when I began pursuing the snake on foot wanting to tail it to get an even closer look. I started running after it and was amazed at its speed. I got in front of it but it faked me out and I slid and busted my butt...when I got up, the snake was just a memory. I wish I'd had my camera. Oh well, thanks for reading.

One time in lake wales fla. I was hunting for trash piles and after walking for an hour I found my self at a dead end and had to literialy climb my way thru a peppertree thicket, and this is a nightmare, if you never did it but was my only option so.. halfway thru I hear "snake slither" and by the way have found many snakes before just by listining on the woods but anyway I freeze and all of a sudden three> 4-5 foot easterns come full throttle thru this web of peppertree directly underneath me (I was off the ground) and all I could do was be still, and stuck, while the trio (I think was 2 males and a female running for her life)of snakes, like bullets ripped thru there, but I went in their direction and cought up to them and watched as the males chriscrossed over the female 20 times and tried to stay away from each other while tring to stop her but they did not seem to notice me moving in closer and closer, they were too focused on the female and she was not in the mood apparently...JB
