My shnieders skink -a week later

ladylizard Jul 02, 2006 11:38 AM

I went to every site I could find on feeding skinks. The person that wrote me telling me you should not see his spine and the outlook looked bleek, I took as a challange. I had known that since he was given to me from the terrible place he came from I had my work cut out for me. But, hearing the words was more of a confirmation that I couldn't let this guy suffer. Aside from the calcium powder on gut packed crickets, meal worms, greens, that I got. i went out and bought him snails, Merrick catfood, fruits and vegetables, anything I could find that there was documentation that this type of skink would eat it. He was so weak, I lterally had to pick him up and carry him to the dish, or he would sleep through food. WELL, YOU SHOULD SEE HIM NOW!!!! I wish I has a scale. In one week, I watched him gobble up what ever he chose to eat- and BOY DID HE EAT!!!!The spine is almost not visible at all. I can't catch him anymore as he literally runs from me, so he has to go to the dish on his own, and he now does. And he has been making tunnels under the sand like crazy. I swear he is like a whole new lizard (still has a bent tail, though). I will take new pictures. (I just had a car accident yesterday so I am really confined to being sedentary myself for right now, and I am dependant on my 16 year old daughter and my husband to care for my herps.) But, thank you for your help on this list. This little guy will definately make it. I have never seen a creature eat that much. BTW, Do their jaws detach like snakes. He can open his mouth to fit food in it bigger than his head. It is kind of amazing to watch him swallow food.

They cant detach their jaws to eat but kinda look that way. Your better off giving him small bite size stuff.

I was reading your other posts glad he is doing well as thats a long shot to get them the way you got yours and than such a comeback.

I have an Ocellated skink and a Fire skink . Like you I cant post pics lol as not good at it but unlike you I cant hold either skink because they dont like it.

The ocellated hides a lot than basks than hides again . The fire is out all the time. A friend told me that there is a wild "colony" of Schneiders or Berbers living in a sandy but vegetated part of Miami . I imagine released or escaped pets .

If yours doesnt shed right mist him . They as a whole dont like that but it helps with bad sheds if you have a bad shed. Sorry to hear about the car accident hope things work out.

I offer a Humid-Hide-Box during shed days. He always uses it.

I will put in a moist hide for him and see if that helps his peeling.
