Disappointed, Humbled, and Tough Luck!?

Shane Kinney Jul 02, 2006 12:33 PM

Most people post breeding successes and you usually don't hear about the disappointments, so I thought I would post one.

My motley male(Norman Jr.) should absolutely no interest in breeding with any females at 18 months old, so I was really looking forward to breeding him this year. I put him first with my biggest and oldest girl, a 7 year old, just under 9' and over 40lbs and there was immediate courting as seen in this pic:

She had a nice ovulation in the pic below and everything looked to be going well with her and I was looking forward to a nice litter.

Well, she ended up giving birth to a bunch of slugs and a really gooey mess prematurely. If that wasn't enough, she passed away the next day. A ruptured ovary or something else? I do know that breeding does put a lot of stress on these animals.

After Norman Jr. finished breeding the previous female I placed him with a albino poss het snow female, who he showed no interest in. I then placed him with a nice proven contrasty normal girl who produced a nice litter of 20 salmons and normals last year with only 1 slug. Norman Jr. bred her aggresively and she had a nice ovulation. She went full term and yesterday morning at 127 days past ovulation or 107 POS she delivered this:

She delivered 18 slugs, 13 big & healthy normals and NO motleys! Were the slugs all motleys? Who knows. Bummer!!! A lot of disappointment here while cleaning up the slugs and cage!
Here is a recent pic of Norman Jr. who still hasn't produced any motleys, but he's still my favorite!

Yes, boas can be extremely humbling and require tons of patience!! I guess there's always next year, eh? lol.

Congrats to everybody who has had some awesome litters of boas this year. Keep them coming so I can drool and be jealous! lol. Happy 4th of July.

Norman Jr is the nicest motley that I have ever seen. Who produced him and who is Norman Senior?

I absolutely agree, that is a fantastic Motley..
.
In future they may want to decide which boa is the primary mate for that boa and work that pairing exclusively until it is beyond doubt the job is done.. Here, I normally do not try to get multiple breedings from one male and in fact we start new projects preferably with a 2.1 group, not 1.2 (or more females). I know some breeders who rely upon one male to breed multiple females that get ok results. Here we experience a very high percentage of perfect litters and rarely try multiple pairings with the same male unless it is obvious he's gotten the job done with his primary mate.

...agree that 1 or 2 males per female is best especially with BCC's, but with BCI's I think its a little different and I didn't move him or other males until I saw a definitive ovulation with the other female.

Norman Jr. was produced by Jeremy Stone and came from Norman, the founding father motley.

Shane...sorry to hear about your loss of the female. The next season will be here before we know it and I have a feeling you may get some Motleys next year. He is an awesome looking Boa...Take care- Brett

Shane Kinney Jul 02, 2006 04:39 PM

...always next year.

Jeremy Stone Jul 02, 2006 05:08 PM

Shane,

I'm soo sorry to hear that, and Sorry for your loss. Boas can be very humbling, and VERY rewarding. That REALLY stinks on your odds, and I'm sure it was just the odds. Last week I had something similar, but I can't complain.

I bred a Motley het Anerythristic Female to a Motley Male. She gave birth to 16 babies and a slug on Wednesday. Of the 16 babies, NO SUPER MOTLEYS!!! I was on the plus side of the Motley count over the normals, so I'm very thankful for that, but I was hoping for at least 4 of those to be SUPERS. Ohwell.....

I know all the hard work you have put in, and the investments you have made. I really love to see a guy like you who loves the animals, and supports the market to do well. I'm saddened by your loss, and I wish you the best of luck next year with Norman Jr.

I constantly tell myself "NEXT YEAR". I guess that should be my snake Motto. "Next year will always be better"

I'm sure next year will be better for you.

Take Care, Jeremy Stone

...those crazy odds! You should've had supers from that litter! Yep, next year will be better!

Shane, I am very sorry to hear of your lost. I know this does not come as any comfort but it has happen to most of us at some point and time, and it hurts each and every time. The odds are never on our side and if so its just luck. Keep you head up and I am sure next year will be better for you.

...I know everybody thats bred enough boas has disappointments like this and I can really sympathize with them!

STUART Jul 03, 2006 02:27 PM

Didnt you know that? THERES ALWAYS NEXT YEAR. I think that statement has kept me going now for well over 10 years breeding boas lol. Next year will be the best year ever! Any how sorry for the bad luck, but every once in a while you get that with the boas, two good years of great production and then one year of nothing. It will come back around if you hang in there trust me it always does.
