What to get for breeding?

Mehen Aug 01, 2003 09:47 PM

I am on a high school budget right now and would like to get into breeding ball pythons. I already own two and know all about the husbandry and what to look for. I would just like to know the best things to buy/build for them, what is the best cage to use for breeding, etc...

thanks

I would think the ideal enclosure for a ball python would be apart of the husbandry rather than breeding of the animal. What I mean is if you know the husbandry that well then you already know how to house them. Many of us breed them in their regular enclosures. If you have only one pair then I think it would be best for you to do the same.

Do some web searches on ball python breeding and read about the whole process. Then be prepared to wait, breeding season isn't that far away.

Good luck to you!

Thanks for the advise, but I have one more question. I am using cypress/fir bark as the substrate right now and was wondering what would be the best substrate for the eggs to be hatched on?

I would take them away from the mother and put them inside an incubator which should be filled with vermiculite.

But if your going/want to do maternal incubation its probably better if done on newspaper.

At least thats what I would think....newspaper more hygenic an dosen carry parasites.

If IM wrong please correct me...........

Thanks Mike

so should I let her lay the eggs on the cypress and then move them into the incubator or would it be better to have a small box with vermaculite in it for her to lay the eggs in?

I recomend getting "The Ball Python Manual" by Philippe de Vosjoli, Roger Klingenberg, D.V.M., David Barker, and Tracy Barker. I just bought it today and it looks pretty good. Or if you like...visit Melissa Kaplin's website. She is author of a very good book on Iguana care and I have to admit she's pretty clever. Here's her web-adress.
