Swollen closed eyes hatchling red-belly

JEREMYLTOWN Jul 03, 2006 01:01 PM

My hatchling WC red bellied turtle cannot open his eyes.He was feeding on Romaine lettuce mainly with live flies occasionally.I also have a hatcHling Eastern Painted turtle who is feeding on Reptomin sticks and flies.I thought I could help by putting drops of ZOO MED Repti Turtle eye drops in but to no avail.I changed the water and put them both in a glass of water. Now that they're back in the aquarium the painted turtle's eyes are closing up as well. How can I help them without vet treatment? I have also tried cod liver oil drops and eyes are still closed as they have been for 2 days now.Thank You for helping me to save my turtles.

Maybe its a vitamin A deficiency. You can get Vitamin A drops from pet stores that you put on the food or directly into their eyes. If i were you, I'd just stick with Reptomin. I've used it for over 10 years and never had a problem, except for slight obesity.

Also, if youre not willing to take your animals to a vet, don't bother keeping any. Its your responsibility to make sure theyre alright even if it takes a chunk out of your wallet.

For the past 3 days I have squirted repti drops in it's eyes as well as a capsule of cod liver oil every other day.My hatchling painted turtle's eyes were starting to close as well and I think it could be a fungus.I rinsed the aqarium and soaked all supplies in soapy water while I kept the turtles in a small plastic tub with 1/2 in water, cod liver oil capsule, and a 1/4 bottle of repti drops.Today when I set them outside in the sun they both opened thier eyes! Still a little puss on them but they are scratching it off. This is leading me to believe they are happier outdoors so I am keeping them in the outdoor goldfish pond now.The painted turtle is eating reptomin sticks and the red belly is eating the algae off of the sides.I think I'll keep them out in the pond for a few days because the sunlight really makes them more active.Only concern now is predators but I am reading up on how to control that situation.I was using an ESU Reptile SUPER UV DAYLIGHT bulb which I think was not producing intense enough UV rays.Any thoughts on the best bulb for them??

I use a ZooMed Basking bulb. Used it for a looong time and its never failed. Just make sure you provide a diet high in calcium and vitamin D3 (reptomin)
