last cage construction ?

johnnyblazekfd Jul 03, 2006 03:29 PM

I am just putting the finishing touches on my plans and am wondering, would it be okay to have a muli-unit one piece constructed cage like that of a bookcase? I am not worried about weight or mobility of the cage as these will stay put. That would be the only downside that I could see. I was just wondering if these will be sturdy enough to hold the weight of rtb's. I know that the individual cages stacked on top of each other is the norm. and is originally what I was planning on doing, but that just seems like a lot of extra cuts and wasted wood. Of course, I would dado everything to aid in sturdyness. Is there any reason why this wouldnt work? thanks for any info.... Jon

Jon,

This works fine and is more than strong enough to hold RTB's and even the largest water bowl. I have actually built stacks like this without dado joints and as far as I know the cages are still in use.

About the only downfall that I can see is a greater chance of heat build up in the upper cages since the heat only has to conduct through a single layer of material rather than a double layer of material like you have when stacked.

One piece of advice - use the money saved on material to buy a higher quality caster. Not the casters at Home Depot but something of higher quality.
