pastel X pastel question, etc...

santoury Jul 03, 2006 07:18 PM

Hello
I am now about to get into pastels, and need to know if the lines must be the same for getting supers.

For instance, what would a graziani X nerd produce? Any supers, or just some pastels? If so, what would the pastel babies be called, as far as lineage?

I also need to know what it means when people say "Pastel sibling" When bred together, do they produce pastels at all? (If so, does it have to be to one another, or one of these "hets" to a normal?)

First off congrats on deciding to keep ball pythons. Pastel's are some of the prettiest ball pythons and at a cost where almost anyone can afford. As far as the lines go mixing the lines will give you a super pastel. The pastel gene works as a co-dominant trait. A pastel bred to a normal would give you in theory a 50/50 split of normals and pastels. A pastel bred to another pastel would in theory give you 25% supers, 25% normals and 50% pastels. Any crossing of the lines is ok but some people prefer how each line looks and some people don't care. Hope this helps you some.

The different lines are all the same they are just names and will all produce supers when mixed. They were all WC at some point. There are more wc pastels that come in every year but people don't bother naming them their line anymore.

A "pastel sibling" is a normal and does not carry the pastel gene. As a co-dominant trait, if a snake carries the gene, the trait is visible. Technically, a pastel IS a het, and the super is the monozygous condition. Sooo, if you breed two "pastel siblings" together, all you get is normals. If you breed a pastel to a "pastel sibling", you get the same odds as with any other pastel x normal, 50% pastels, and 50% normals.
