Keeping sulcatas with dogs

rudedogsurfrat Jul 04, 2006 01:47 AM

I was going to let my sulcata have more room in the back yard.
The dog is back there and I'm worried that he'd eat dog poop.
Will a sulcata eat dog poop and what are the health risks?

they seem to love it-id say as long as your dog doesnt have parasites itd be ok. i have one and hell travel the yard till he finds a bit of the tasty stuff-it seems the older the better id discourage it-but maybe its a delicacy

My sulcata is waaay bigger than my dog. About 56 lbs heavier than the dog so I don't worry about the dog harming the tortoise, I worry more about the tortoise ramming the dog.

We lost our old dog in May, he was very sick and on a lot of medication- thyroxine, mitotane, enacard and Interceptor, so I made sure I pooper scooped as soon as he did anything.

In a healthy dog heartworm medication is a huge concern for keeping sulcatas and dogs in the same yard.
Heartworm prevention medication that contains ivermectin can kill your sulcata. Ivermectin leaves a dog's body through the feces, sulcatas like to eat feces so that's a deadly combination.
You need to be sure that your dog takes a heartworm preventative that does not contain ivermectin. I believe there are only 2-3 that don't have ivermectin so be sure your vet prescribes one of the brands that doesn't have it.

We bought a new baby dog on the 23rd of June, he's getting along fine with the sulcata so far
