Outdoor bugs??

lola44 Jul 04, 2006 06:38 AM

Hi, I built a new cage for outdoor use yesterday for my veiled. As I was sweating away building it I was also swatting away lots of flying bugs especially sweat bees. Now that I'm considering putting my big guy out there for some natural sunlight I'm a little afraid of what he might be eating when he is out there. I used the hardware cloth not screen for the cage so there is the possibility that something may get in there. If he eats a bee will it hurt him? Thanks, Lo

There have been a few posts/articles that I have read where the people say that chameleons can handle bees....but I'm not sure I would want my chameleons to go after one.

Fire flies have proven toxic and I expect that lady bugs and other bright/warning-colored bugs might not be good for them either.

In addition to the bugs themselves being toxic/harmful, there is the worry that they have come from areas where insecticides have been used. I also wonder what would happen to the chameleons if they picked up parasites that they were not used to.

I have heard of lots of people feeding wild caught insects to their chameleons with no problems resulting.....but I can't give you a definite yes. You'll have to weigh the pros and cons for yourself!
