Listerine as a Mold Preventative???

LloydHeilbrunn Jul 04, 2006 04:35 PM

I have some Bairdi eggs, laid 35 days ago in a long stuck together string.Unfortunately, some look moldy, and it seems to be spreading slowly to adjacent eggs.

One reference material I have suggests using a 10% Listerine solution to prevent mold but it is the only place I've seen this.

Does it work and is it safe? Thanks.

I've never seen this done, and would be cautious trying something that you only find on one site. I guess if you're desperate, you could try it. The worst thing that'll happen is none hatch which might be the end result anyways. How early is it in incubation? I have come across using diluted betadine and lightly painting the eggs with a cotton tipped applicator. Best success with either product would be with the lightest application possible. The eggs shouldn't be wet. My concern about listerine over betadine is that it has alot of ingredients that arn't related to antibacterial/antifungal uses.

Of course, if in a long string/clump, is it unreasonable to sacrifice a few eggs to dislodge the growing plague and remove it altogether?

Good luck

Ian

On another forum, someone suggested Tenactin to Lloyd.... May have been a joke....maybe not.
Have any of you "MED folks" any thoughts on this?
