Update on Central Plains Milk Snake

kaysie Jul 04, 2006 06:05 PM

As requested, here are some post-shed pics. He's not very bold or bright, but he was a rescue (as are all my snakes). Seems like a little charmer.

Central Plains milksnakes don't get that big, AFAIK. That snake also looks too big for a Lampropeltis ruthveni.

It also could be a hybrid, but if I had to guess, I would say it is an old adult milksnake phase L.m. thayeri.

I don't know that you are going to positively ID that animal without talking to the original owner/creator, which is probably impossible with a rescue.

Ok, y'all need to make up your mind

I'm not sure what he is. I keep pythons mainly, and have no real experience with kingsnakes. But it was offered, and I'm not one to turn down a snake.

But you good people know a lot more about Lampropeltis than I do, so I offered it up. So what's the going Species then?

Well, from your first pics I was almost certain it was a central plains, but from these new pics it is very obvious that isn't the case. Chrish is right. I have no idea what is it other than a Lampropeltis...lol.

Kaysie Jul 06, 2006 11:14 PM

Well, you've at least an idea. I had no clue! General consensus seems to be thayeri now... I'll probably never know, but it's good to have an idea. I do a lot of shows, and get a lot of 'what is that?'. It's hard telling a 5 year old that you just don't know what kind of snake you have. lol.

You could go with "it's a kingsnake" but I still say Thayeri is in it. That head shape is distinctive, like a shovel!
