Tiger Salamanders native to NY?

lonegreywolf20 Jul 05, 2006 11:36 AM

I am curious to see if Tiger Salamanders are native to New Work. My son seen one as I was perusing pictures here on Kingsnake.com and now he would like one to keep as a pet. It would be in his room, but I would actually be the main care taker. The reason why I am asking is because New York passed some regulations that states you are not allowed to keep any native species of reptile or amphibian. So rather then get someone in trouble or myself in trouble, I figured I would ask real quick.

As far as I know, it's legal in the city, might be different if you're elsewhere in NY.

the eastern tiger salamander is native to the long island area of New York and is listed as endangered in NYS by the DEC. the import, capture, and posession of the Eastern tiger sal requires a special permit and/or license issued by the NYS DEC. as a NYS resident and keeper of tiger sals i have been through the hassels of the permit applications and inspection by the DEC. i have 5 differnet species of tigers, one endangered in NYS and 3 endangered according to the federal fish and wildlife division. the eastern is one of the species listed as federally endangered last i looked and required another special permit to obtain.
If you want to get through all the red tape, find yourself a barred, blotched, or grey tiger salamander. they are common in the pet trade and are on the kingsnake classifieds from time to time.
