Egg Binding problem

toppy Jul 05, 2006 12:02 PM

I have a 5 year old female hondo who was about 450 grams out of hibernation and bred. She laid 5 eggs two days ago but from what I can feel by holding her she has 3 eggs left in her. I tried to express them last night but I may have only moved them a short distance. At what point is she egg bound. Do I give her a few more days to get them out??? Also what options do I have to get them out. I have heard everything from using mineral oil in her clocia, to using a syringe to drain the egg fluid to taking her to a vet and have them give her a drug to induce contractions and then drain the eggs in a few days if nothing happens. any other thoughts???

Let me know thanks

Chris

Hey Chris-
Head over to the Kingsnake Forum for some thoughts on the subject dated 7-4&5.

The number one cause of egg binding, IMHO, is disturbing the female before, during, and while laying. If you know your female is close, leave her be. Don't even clean the cage. Any movement may disturb her. If she is in the middle of laying, don't peak to see how many are out. I did once and the female got stuck with 3 eggs. She's bred successfully since and I never disturb her anymore when gravid.

I use a box which is completely darkened w/ a lid and a small hole. The bottom is clear and sits directly on the floor of the cage/tub. This way, I check by slowly opening the tub/cage and looking from the bottom. You'll be able to see if she's deposited. From that point I usually wait 18-24 hours later before seeing if she's done, never removing the lid at all.

Your female may have eventually pass the eggs on her own. You probably shouldn't intervene until 14-16 days post shed. Even then, she may resorb them. I know it is tough to back off, but it is your cheapest and most successful option available.

Good Luck
