Do you know the approximate length? A picture with a ruler or yardstick would be great. I agree with Chris Harrison that it looks too big to be a Central Plains milksnake, or any milksnake from the United States. My vote would be a Ruthven's Kingsnake or a Milksnake Phase Variable Kingsnake (Thayeri), but looks longer then they normally get. They rarely get much longer than 3 feet or so. It may just be that it is an exceptionally long ruthveni or thayeri. Did you keep the shed skin? A count of the ventral scales may help in ID'ing it. Problem is that there are many milksnakes and tri-colored kingsnakes that look similar to yours and it is often very hard to tell the difference. And, as Chris said, it may be a cross between two different species.

Alas, it is hard to do anything as I have to send home requests for pictures from my herp-sitter.

At least I've got some sort of idea what it is.

It actually looks very similar to my milksnake phase thayeri, especially the head which is identical...I can't remember, where did you get this snake?

It's a very old Ruthveni judging by the faded red and far too large for Thayeri. Needs some feeding too. Jeff

It ate one large mouse when we first got it, which was a little hard to swallow, and 2 small mice this week.

Getting rescues back up to proper size is an arduous task, and doesn't happen overnight.
