Eating Problems

oldrippy Jul 05, 2006 04:46 PM

I have a burmese that was born in october of last year. He is a little more than three feet long. I saw him eat a mouse the day I bought him which was either late november or early december. After that he was eaten mice once a week with no problem and he was eating frozen. come may he just stopped eating. I tried feeding him live freshly killed and frozen I've left it in the cage with him dangled it in front of him with tongs he just won't eat. Does anyone have any Ideas?

Sometimes they just stop, but luckily mine hasn't, longest my burm went wit out eating was 3 weeks.

Do you have a/c in your house? I find that at times, when the a/c is running, my snakes, all large boids, go off their feed.
When the a/c is turned down or off, they resume feeding.
Yet my ambient temps are high, and cage temps are of course even higher.
Don't know if it is the a/c, all I know this is the second summer I've observed this.
Also, check your cage temps, humidity, etc...and if nothing yet...have your vet check your burm for worms.

Yes I have AC and I actually already checked the burm for worms and thats he doesn't have them he just seems like scared of the food he always either hides under the bedding or under a log if I try to feed him in his tank. I usually feed my snakes in a rubbermaid tub though and when he is in there he just slithers to the other side of the tub and won't touch the mouse like he is scared of it. I have left him with the mouse (frozen of course) in the tub unsupervised for 6 hours and he never ate it. I've sat and watched him not eat a live mouse for 1 hour. Like it seems like he Is just scared of the food I don't know how else to put it.

You mention your other snakes, so I'm assuming you have the basic conditions covered. It is a long time to fast...how about trying a rat pup? Since he seems jumpy, you might try introducing the prey at the lip of his hide, then lights-out and check him in the morning.
