Pumilio Bastimentos

s-holden Aug 01, 2003 10:48 PM

Do you recommend keeping pumilio in the bedroom? Would the rasping sound of their calling keep me awake at night when I sleep? Is anyone keeping pumilio or any other dart frogs in their bedroom and find their calling annoying and distracting and prevent you from having a good night sleep? Let me know.

Thanks

Good grief! In the first place, the Dendroabtes are diurnal and don't call at night. If you sleep during the day, the refrigerator going on an off is louder than the loudest leukomelas. In the second place, those of us who raise them are always in a quandary about whether we have even heard them, or what we have heard is a male calling from the pumilio/imitaor/whatever tank, or just the refrigerator squeeking. We sometimes spend many hours trying to sex the frogs by observing a male calling. These are not chorus frogs. They will not serenade you like an incessant Wagnerian opera.

The annoyance may come with the exacting care and specifics they require, such as raising tons of fruit flies, springtails and crickets to feed them, keeping specific humidity, temperatures, misting and building inventive terrariums to house them with a lot of tropical plants you need to appreciate, as well. Pumilios aren't what you want to start out with, and that's not because they will bother your sleep with noise. It's becaue you have to learn a hell of a lot and take a lot of time and effort to build your first vivarium for your first dart frogs. It is not about worrying whether they might bother your sleep with noise. If you are willing to pay from $125.00 to $150.00 plus shipping, per froglet the size of your small fingernail, the least of your worries is whether it will ever annoy you by making too much noise.

To be perfectly fair about noise level annoyances, I should have mentioned that I have a couple of wannabe "rock stars" living with me, with drums, amps and distorters, which has accentuated my appreciation for the much more musical frog songs. I purchased a pair of ear muffs of the quality used by jack hammer operators, which is always an option.

One thing I have noticed with my Leucs, which may or may not be true with Pumilios is that my leuc male calls in the morning when the lights first come on. I will have to say that the little bugger is LOUD. I have heard that other species are not as loud. He has woke me up a few times on the weekend since my lights turn on at 5:30am. Poor guy calls a lot, too bad the 2 females in with him just think he is annoying at this point. Maybe in a couple months that will change and I will get some eggs.

I keep just one pair of Bastimentos in my bedroom. The male calls in the morning as well, and since the enclosure's next to my bed, his calling is kinda loud, but I have them on a timer so they think the morning is at 12:00 noon. My Bri-Bri's are the same way, they call most during "dusk" and "dawn."

As Slayontop said don't start with these guys. I being a 15 year old teenager live at home and am restricted to my room for keeping my animals. I haven't had my 2 species of darts call yet, but yet it is often difficult to fall asleep. I have 3 water filters running and an air purifier everyday 24 hours a day. These can be noisy, as well as those stupid fire bellied toads that call and call, like I am going to add a female(sorry). If you can, don't put your terrariums in your bedroom. Also a single pumilio call isn't too bad, but when you are in the jungle and pumilio are everywhere, it gets really loud, believe me I have been there, Twice! I agree with slayontop on this topic

Why not buy a timer and turn all your filters and stuff off to at night. I'm sure that would not hurt anything. I turn off my waterfall at night, maybe it will make the pump last longer, replacing it will not be fun at all.

I did that for a while, but I found that the start up noises got irritating and would cause more wear on the motor because they are running with less water. But maybe I'll try it again

Hello!

...I hope my response will help.

I have 'Blue Jean' pumilios, not the Bastimentos. I keep my pumilios in my bedroom (they used to be in the living room). When I had a breeding pair the male would call almost every 10 minutes! And it was loud! Yes...the 'BJ'-pumilios have woken me up in the morning on occasion (once the timer turns on the lights, the calling is initiated almost immediately).

I really wasn't annoyed at the frogs chirping mainly because I was always fascinated by how such a small frog can develop such loud noise. Moreover, my lights turn on at 8:00a, and that's when the frogs begin rasping, but that's also the time I gotta get up and go to work. So they also functioned as an alarm to get me up.

They mainly call during the day but I have heard them calling during the evening on occasion (prolly because there were lights on). However, they should't bother you during the night.

More info on my pumilio captives or pics? Just email me.

Have fun!!

Id both agree and disagree. I am a very heavy sleeper and there is no way the pumillio would wake me. However there call is about as loud as a cricket chirping which if your tank is not completly sealed is very audible. I often sleep till 10 am which is about the time my male starts his chirp-a-thon. While it has never woken me im sure it is possible to wake someone.
