BRBs and scale rot

Christine_Calmes Aug 01, 2003 10:55 PM

I've read that BRBs are relatively resistant to scale rot, but I'm wondering how damp I should keep the substraight that I have my baby on. I'm keeping her on paper towels, but I'd like to know it is okay for her to be on damp paper towels constantly, or if she needs a dry spot. I don't keep a humidity gauge (as humidity is very relative) and hand mist daily or more as necessary – so please don't give me a numerical answer.

Thanks in advance!

Christine,
. Mine are on damp substrate around half to two thirds of the time. I think they would be okay if the substrate was damp all of the time. Having the substrate dry is a far bigger problem than having it damp. If the substrate stays dry in my cages for more than a couple of days they dehydrate and have sheddding problems. Adults do not require nearly as much humidity as babies.

It allows you to screw up. Give the snake a choice. Dry cage, moist hide box, moist cage, dry hide box, whatever. Give the snake a choice, then you can't go wrong (unless the snake is mentally challenged).

Also, each snake is different, so find out for yourself. If the snake is always in the water dish, it might be telling you something (cage is too hot, mites, or you need more humidity, or there's no suitable hide better than the water dish). If your snake is always in a dry hide box, well that might tell you something to. Snakes are wonderful things when we actually watch them and study them.
