Newbie question...

dragoninthemist Jul 06, 2006 02:12 AM

Oh...I feel like I should know this...
I'm sure its been asked about 10000000000000000 times...

But often, when I'm looking online at herps, I see stuff like:

1.2 leopard gecko

And of course, being the uninformed individual I am...I have to chuckle and wonder how one has 1 1/2 leopard geckos. Please, could someone point out to me what that means?

Also, since I'm asking silly questions, when I see something that says "Bearded Dragon CB" what does the CB stand for.

Thanks...thanks...I just know this has been asked a lot...

The first number means the number of males, the second number means the number of females and the third number (when its used) means the number that you don't know the sex of yet.

So...
3.2.1 means that there are 3 males and two females and one "unknown".

CB means "captive bred", an animal whose parents live in captivity. These are generally the best animals to buy, in terms of health, hardiness, and temperament.

CH means "captive hatched", an animal whose egg was laid in the wild, but was collected and hatched in captivity.

LTC means "long term captive", an animal that was born in the wild and lived there for some time, but has been living in captivity for a long time. They have usually been treated for parasites and may have been tamed somewhat.

WC means "wild caught", an animal that was taken from the wild relatively recently. Caution should be used when buying wild caught animals due to the possibility of them carrying parasites or diseases. They also tend to be more fragile than captive bred animals.
