Zia, one year later...

nekomi Jul 06, 2006 02:48 AM

Hi everyone,

I know it's been a long time since I posted here, but on a whim, I was going through the Kingsnake forum archives reading some of my old posts from 2003-2005. Sounds boring, but it was a trip into nostalgia for me. It was really interesting to read all my nerve-ridden posts from my early snake-owning days. I went through a difficult time with Zia when I first got her (some of you might remember), but since that initial worrying period, it has been smooth sailing with her.

I thought you all might like to see a few pics of her, now that she's grown into a beautiful, nearly-2-year old subadult. I'm going to take some better full body shots soon, as well as some handling and nighttime shots (we all know our BRBs don't show their true colors until the sun goes down), but for now, I hope everyone enjoys these pics!

And thanks again to everyone who has helped me here these past few years. I really appreciate all the time you spent helping me get through the rough spots with Zia.

I guess I have a question, too, while we're at it! For those of you who have docile BRB's, how do they act when you handle them? Zia is extremely handleable, and doesn't bite while being held, but she is also the most "flighty" of all my snakes. She is always cruising along trying to find the nearest escape route, and loves diving into little dark spots like a fold in my jeans or a pocket. Either that, or she is trying to leap/bolt off my arm and across the floor.

I assume this is the norm for BRB's since they are somewhat shy and like to burrow, but I only ask because it is so different from my other snakes. Houdini, my leucy ratsnake, could probably spend hours just perching on my fist and arm. Not in a lethargic way like a ball python, but in a curious, calm, and relaxed way. And my white-lipped python (which regrettably passed away last month) was simply a devil of a snake. He was not tame in the slightest, but never tried to get away. He'd rather shoot straight up my arm to tag me. *LOL* Anyway, just curious what everyone else's experiences have been. I find the differences in snake species to be so interesting!

Nekomi,
..Great PICs. Some of my adults are like yours and will not sit still when held and some of them are the opposite and will just wrap around my hands and stay still.
