Toad eater: Xenodon werneri

Oxyrhopus Jul 06, 2006 09:57 AM

I posted these pics on the venomous forum as this character is rear fanged like hognose snakes but actually has mid-fangs and is quite harmful if it bites a human. In any case, I had difficulty feeding them southern toads and just yesterday obtained some Bufo margaritiferus from their county of Surinam where the Xenodon are from. Well it took a second for the Xenodon to latch onto them. I do not like feeding toads, and am working to condition them to rodents, so apologize to anyone who finds these photographs offensive.

Well they eventually settle down to handling with gloves and are predictable when they are in a bad mood. It's all about handling them with gloves and predicting/knowing if or when they had enough, but they calm down eventually. However the case, I make it a point to never handle any snakes unless I must move it for cleaning, and as such, use tongs and forcepts to go around the specimens and never touch them much.
