Snake spotted near Cancun, Mexico

squeeker Jul 06, 2006 10:37 AM

I was vacationing in the Mayan Riviera, just south of Cancun, when I spotted this snake. The picture is poor, but the snake appeared to be quite irridescent (blues and greens). It was lighter on the head, and darker near the tail. It was around 3 feet in length. The scales were very defined, as if they were keeled.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hard to tell from that photo, but I guess it could have been a Black-tailed Cribo (Drymarchon melanurus).

Yah, that picture is pretty bad. I sure wish I could go back to Mexico and take another pic!

While looking up the black-tailed Cribo, I came across a site:

www.yucatanwildlife.com/species/reptiles.htm

After looking at the pictures on that site, I'm pretty sure it wasn't a cribo, but a speckled racer, drymobius margaritiferus. Pretty snake!

Thanks for the help!

Wow. I would never have figured Drymobius from that photo!
