Basking area temp not right

embowe Jul 06, 2006 03:50 PM

I am currently getting a home ready for a baby ball that I plan on getting in the next few weeks. Everything seems to be going well so far other than the fact that I cant get the basing area the right temp....either I have it ~100 or ~75...what size (watt) ceramic filiment would I need to be at the ~90 temp? The only reason I ask is that I dont want to have to deal with the day/night cycle of lights so from what I can figure out a non-light emmitting filiment will be great for this. All my other temps seem fine and the humidity as well...this is my only shortcoming I cannont get right

Go to pet smart and get a zoo med rheostat to control the temps.

Use an under tank heating pad. Ceramic heaters, or heat lights are not needed for balls, and do nothing but dry out you cage. An under tank pad on a thermostat is all you need.

While you're out getting the rheostat or thermostat, go to Walmart and pick up an appliance timer (digital works best). Just set the timer for 8am to 10pm and plug your heater (or rheostat/thermostat) into it, and you've got day/night cycles. No hassles at all. AND, you save money on electricity! AND, you'll have a happier snake!

You should only have a night time drop during breeding season IMO. A nightime drop will not give you a happier snake but could give you an URI.

I use under tank heating as well as a ceramic basking light. Together they make the warm end of the tank around 85 and the cool end in the low 70's. I have the ceramic basking light on a timer, so it goes off at night, but the under tank heating stays on. This cools the air slightly, but doesn't allow the tank to get below 73F or so.
