I'm new to crested geckos...

dangerhoax Jul 06, 2006 08:51 PM

Hi. I just adopted 3 tiny crested geckos from petco. One dropped it's tail, and the other two were brought back from an individual who couldn't keep them. I was hoping I could get some help with care/feeding. They have all been on the T-rex crested diet for a while now. Does anyone else use this diet? Is it ok to feed them just that without insect prey? Should I also add calcium and a multi vitamin, and if so how often? I have the two individuals that were brought back housed together in a 10 gallon plastic cage with lots of plastic plants. The one that dropped it's tail is housed alone in a similar enclouser. Both cages have a water dish and food dish with the t-rex food. I have been reading the care sheets so I think they are going to be fine. They all are about 2 inches snout to vent. When can I see the bulge in the males? Sorry for the beginner questions. I keep burmese pythons so I'm not used to guys this little! I've been wanting to get into crested geckos for a while and could'nt pass up the opportunity to adopt three lil babies. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated. I'll have pics up in a week or so after they get acclimated.

Congratulations on your recent acquisition. Best of luck with your little guys/gals. Although, you are on the right track if you are using the Kingsnake forum and reading care sheets!

Crested geckos can be maintained on the CGD (crested gecko diet) offered by T-Rex. This is an excellent, well balanced food to offer your geckos. There are a couple of brands out there.
You will find varying opinions on using CGD as the sole diet for cresteds. A friend, and major breeder of these delightful animals mentioned that he went over to this diet a couple years ago and his egg production dropped off significantly. Since we added crickets to their diet, egg production went right back up again.

I've gone the opposite way- been feeding crickets/mealworms for a couple year and recently started adding CGD to their diet once a week.

Just guessing at the age of your animals but the male bulge should appear shortly- within the next few months. Be careful as males usually do not tolerate each other very well. If you end up with a male and a couple females, and you wish to house them together, a 20 gallon (high) tank would be the minimum they should be kept in. Lots of plants (live and artificial) help. A water dish is good but some of my cresteds never took to the dish. I spray the plants/tank about once a day. They will immediately lap up the moisture.

Keep the questions coming. Keep us posted on their development.
Looking forward to the pics!

Thanks for the reply and kind words Wally. I got a Crested Gecko Manual by that Phillipe guy. I went ahead and got another plastic enclousure so now all three have their own homes. I just finished a 7 foot long by three foot wide by 2 foot high burm cage so I have a 40 gallon tall aquarium available when I figure out how many males I got. I plan on moving in these guys if they turn out to be 1 male and two females or all females into that 40 gallon. I feed them T-rex crested diet twice a week, and once a week I feed them crickets dusted with T-rex's leopard gecko icb powder. I'm going to keep their water dishes in there, but I also have and will be misting their cages once a night, every night. Their still getting used to thier new sorroundings, so I have not handeled them at all yet. In about 10 days I will get them out and used to regular handling. At that time I'll take some pics. One is a flame harley and is the biggest and most active, one is a orange flame(without the tail) and is very inquisitve, and one I'm not sure about. He/her has white spotted rear shins and appears to be patternless, and is also big but really shy. Thank you!

It's good to see you taking the right approach to keeping geckos- lots of reading, asking questions, and TLC.
It seems you have things well under control.
